Curriculum vitae

Born: 7 September 1946 at Groningen, The Netherlands. High School at Delft, studied biology and geology at Leiden University. Got his doctor’s title at the University of Nijmegen and is now associate professor at the Department of Animal Ecology & Ecophysiology of the same university. He is visiting professor at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel, Belgium where he gives lectures in tropical coastal marine ecology (Ecological Marine Management) (ECOMAMA). He is also guest collaborator of the National Natural History Museum Naturalis at Leiden. He is chairman of the Dutch Malacological Society and a member of the Scientific Council of the International Centre for Ecology of the Polish Academy of Sciences. He is (co)author of more than 165 international publications on aquatic ecology (freshwater, brackish and marine) on which 2 publications in Nature. He was a member of the editorial board of Aquatic Botany and is still in the board of Aquatic Ecology, Biological Invasions, Crustaceana and Chemistry and Ecology. He is reviewer of numerous journals on which  Marine Ecology Progress Series (staff reviewer).  He took part on several marine expeditions on which the Dutch-Kenyan Indian Ocean Expedition as part of the Netherlands Indian Ocean Programme. He was involved in research on marine coastal ecosystems in Kenya, Indonesia, India, and the Caribbean. Main topics of his group are biological invasions,  biofouling, tropical coastal ecosystems (especially nursery function), riverine and estuarine systems in particular macroinvertebrates and fish. Hobby’s: diving, old style jazz (leader of the Piggly Wiggly Washboard Stompers; order for the cd).
